Getting into a motorsport team :)

hey all, this ones aimed at those lucky few in the know how who can hopefully help me out.

I've always had a passion for motorsport, as long as i can remember. Unfortunately, growing up, myself (or my family) didn't have the sort of money needed to get into some karting/entry level sport so my professional driver dreams were just not to be.. oh well. I did however have booksmarts at high school and this has carried my into uni studying Automotive and Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science Double degree.

So my question is, do high level teams like V8s, or even F1 or the like hire graduate engineers. or do they prefer top mechanics which can then learn the engineering side through experience. Perhaps it's all about who you know?

The only reason i ask is it's a 5 year course (half way through second year) and it seems like a lot of effort to get turned down from a career in motorsport to end up designing the door panels for Volvos or something :/
